A Night at O's

Tue Apr 21, 2009, 5:40 PM
  • Listening to: Sixpence None the Richer
  • Watching: X-Play
  • Drinking: Mountain Dew
So, last Saturday, a friend of mine got married. Consequently, people from my college life came back to the Fort and we got a chance to hang out, one more time. One of those friends was my old roomate, Sean Cogan. Since we've graduated, he's lived with other college chums and has embraced the wild world of alcohol. However, I have not see him in a bar and, since our married friends had a dry reception, I decided to get a group together and take him out to one of my favorite bars, O's.

It was here that I got to see a group that I hadn't seen in a long time, "Streetlamps for Spotlights". The last I saw them was at the currently renovating "Firehouse" located in North Manchester, IN. Aside from very painful memories due to a flame still burning, it was a very pleasant experience to see this band, again.

The lineup had changed dramatically from a two-piece (a now defunct romance) to a three-piece and caused me to ask the band what their name was. Due to this change in lineup, the sound had changed. It wasn't mind-blowing, not yet, but it was still a very pleasant sound to see while getting my old roomate drunk. I'd like to get into more detail, but there simply wasn't enough pulling power to make me pay more attention. The EQ and levels didn't help, either. The lows were too high and the sound board that they installed for the occasion cut the electric guitar and much of the vocals out of the mix. So, it would also be unjust to criticize a band crippled beyond their control.

The next band was a surprise. Earlier in the evening, we were curious about the set, but all we could find out was about the next band, Key of Skeleton. Upon actually listening to the band, we found a very mature, nice sound. Again, nothing mind-blowing here, but something worth checking out.

They're also pretty difficult to describe. It was definitely rock first, maybe some folk thrown into the mix with an alternative edge, but still very unique. Check 'em out.

I did get to see the B-Sharps, again. This time, they were quite good. They had less equipment problems and a little more musicality. They still had a bit of the convoluted "See what I can do" attitude, and the drummer still had a few issues, but it seemed to be a stronger mix. Previously, at The Tiger Room, I had a pleasant little chat with the guitar player for the B-Sharps and told him about the tempo issues. It seems like some of that was passed on, though you could still see the beginner tendency to speed up during various fills.

All in all, they were better. Though the equipment wasn't ideal for the entire evening, I'm going to have to give them a revised score.

Bottom line: 3.5/5

As for the whole musical evening, I'd like to give all bands a 3.5/5, but the moron running the board robbed the performers. So, I'll have to give O's a rating:

Bottom line: 2/5

hey thanks for the watch!
Anytime, you seem to have quite a Dada approach to things. At least, I see an influence in there somewhere...
